Week Four: Flickr
Reading Sharon Housleys description of creative commons immediately reminded me of the website Flickr. Created in 2004, Flickr is a photo-sharing website that has integrated created commons in it's interface. This means, upon sharing your photos in various albums or otherwise, you can decide what degree of licensing you want to attribute to your photos. (http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/) An example of a way Flickr uses creative commons is that, unlike most other websites, you are unable to simply drag and drop a photo on your desktop to distribute freely. Depending on your chosen degree of creative commons, you must first ask the artists permission. An example of a Flickr page I am a fan of, is http://www.flickr.com/photos/rickyeatacid/ . You'll notice that if you do in fact decide to try to drag and drop an image of his you like on your desktop, it just places a link to the photo. By placing that link instead of the photo, it brings you straight to the source of the photo, automatically showing the authors credit.
